First Look at Rogue Amoeba Fission

23 September 2006

You don’t always need a table saw; sometimes a pocket knife will do. I just finished editing audio with Rogue Amoeba’s Fission, and it did exactly what I needed: no more, no less.

This just-released Universal Binary sound editor focuses on cutting audio. Sounds simple, and you probably already have a tool to handle that. But with Fission, I can open a MP3 file, snip out an offending segment, then save the edited file without recompressing it. Hmmm…. that is really handy.

iTunes vs. DVD movie quality

22 September 2006

iTunes vs. DVD Movie QualityHacking Netflix has posted screen shots of the Life Aquatic from both the iTunes Movie Store version and the DVD version. Steve Jobs claimed “near” DVD quality but I think it is closer to “farther” rather than “near”. You can obviously see the iTunes movie is blurrier and lacking sharp detail.

Don’t you wish it were just as easy to illustrate the compromises made when listening to AAC at 128 kpbs versus compact disc? Take this illustration with a grain of salt. It’s certainly not the definitive comparison.

Burn music with CD Text in iTunes 7

15 September 2006

Not so much a hint as pointing out a new feature that isn’t listed on the iTunes overview page:

iTunes 7 supports burning CD text (only about five years too late). On the Burning tab in iTunes’ preferences, there is now an option to ‘Inlcude CD Text’ when burning a music CD. I don’t remember this option being there in iTunes 6.

This option is not enabled by default — you need to go and turn it on (at least I did after upgrading to iTunes 7).

Interesting. But read the comments. It may not be the CD Text you are expecting.
